The Rodriguez Family
Meet the rodriguez family
The Rodriguez family is a close-knit household of four who have lived in their two-bedroom apartment since their youngest son Mateo was born.
Relocation
They relocated from Puerto Rico to the mainland United States eight years ago in search of more stability and opportunity, especially for their children. They left behind an extended family that they help support.
Language
Spanish is their first language, and while everyone in the family speaks conversational English, confidence varies—especially in high-stress situations like medical visits, school meetings, or housing conversations where technical language and quick decisions can feel overwhelming.
High-stress situations
Maria feels the language stress most when Mateo is in a new setting, given his peanut allergy and asthma. To help, she has taught him to hand an adult a card she created that clearly explains his needs. Even so, the family works hard to advocate for themselves and for one another.
The combined pressures of work schedules, health concerns, and lack of close family nearby often leave them stretched thin.
